Shoppers not sold on eBay Express

Ebay Inc. is trying to woo online shoppers with its new eBay Express Web site. But it's been a tough sell.Earlier this year, Shelley Mitchell enthusiastically signed up to the eBay Express site launched in April.

The Hollywood, Fla., resident was already selling vintage punk clothes on eBay's main site at a Web page called Addicted to Rockabilly and Punk. The main site lets people sell merchandise either through an auction process or at a fixed price with a feature called "Buy It Now," but eBay Express lists only fixed-price items, to appeal to online shoppers who aren't comfortable bidding on items from a stranger.

I'm Dreaming of a White... PS3?

So what happens when you have plenty of time on your hands along with a background in painting car bodies? You take a PlayStation 3, repaint it, and auction it off of course.
Michal Birecki over at PS3center.net saw that the prices for PS3s have plummeted over at eBay (most of them are going for just a little over cost including taxes), so he decided to make his PS3 a little more "special" to help attract bids.
Using the skills that he learned from his dad who owns a body shop in Montreal, Canada, Michal disassembled his PS3 and repainted it a glossy white with a mirror finish. Even the wireless controller couldn't escape the airbrush as it too is covered in glossy white.
As of now, the auction for the white PS3 is up to $1,225 USD. It looks like the customization trick is working quite well so far.

EBay's Bid to Go Beyond Auctions Isn't Selling Well

EBAY INC. is trying to woo online shoppers with its new eBay Express Web site. But it's been a tough sell.
Earlier this year, Shelley Mitchell enthusiastically signed up to the eBay Express site launched in April. The Hollywood, Fla., resident was already selling vintage punk clothes on eBay's main site at a Web page called Addicted to Rockabilly and Punk. The main site lets people sell merchandise either through an auction process or at a fixed price with a feature called "Buy It Now," but eBay Express lists only fixed-price items, to appeal to online shoppers who aren't comfortable bidding on items from a stranger.
"I was excited at first because I thought [eBay Express] would really give me good exposure," Ms. Mitchell says. The eBay Express link is prominently listed under "Specialty Sites" on eBay's main site, or can be found at express.ebay.com.
But last month, while Ms. Mitchell sold $2,180 of merchandise in 59 individual sales on eBay's main auction site, she didn't sell anything on eBay Express, where she had listed some clothes at a fixed price. It "doesn't seem to be any help," she says.
Other users have also had a lackluster experience. Jonathan Garriss, executive director of the Professional eBay Sellers Alliance, an independent group of eBay sellers, estimates eBay Express accounts for less than 1% of sales for the group's more than 1,000 members, who together sell more than $1 billion a year in merchandise. And while eBay's main auction site attracted more visits than any other online retailer in November, eBay Express was at No. 87 on the list of top shopping and classified sites, according to research firm Hitwise Pty. Ltd.

eBay can be a fun and easy way for people to shop, but identity thieves are using it as a means to steal.

zeeDive Creates Auctions-in-Reverse for eBay Store Items

zeeDive.com, a site that attempts to create shopping excitement by listing items with falling prices, announced it is now possible for eBay Store owners to list their inventory on the site. The company said sellers benefit from additional exposure with no cost to list items - zeeDive charges sellers only when an item sells.
Shoppers on the zeeDive.com website find inventory with falling prices. They can choose to buy an item at the current price, or submit a lower price at which they would be willing to purchase the item - if no one else buys it first at a higher price.

eBay Toots Its Horn over Holiday Marketing Efforts

eBay North America's marketing head Gary Briggs updated users on eBay's marketing efforts in a posting on the eBay Announcement Board on Wednesday. Briggs said the eBay marketing organization has been busy working to get the message out to buyers that "whatever it is, you can get IT on eBay," a reference to eBay's latest advertising campaign theme.

Over 870 stories have been run about eBay this holiday season across newspapers, magazines, TV, and radio, reaching more than 185 million people. eBay recently worked with USA Today and The Wall Street Journal on articles where eBay was featured as a place to find hot gifts for the holidays. Television shows featuring eBay or eBay Express included the Today Show, The View and Tyra Banks. And eBay holiday TV ads have been running on all major networks, including FOX, NBC, CBS, and ABC.
