A little over a year ago I pitched the Vancouver 24 Hours editor on the idea of a column concerning the latest auction oddities listed on Ebay. If you’re reading this now, he said yes.
Let me tell you about another concept I pitched a few months later but, first, here’s a little history.
My dad was a union leader and so when he was home, the TV was always on some channel talking politics. Thanks to being denied sports, cartoons and entertainment, I learned early on to despise politics. The other half of the time he would be gone, attending union meetings all over the province, so I started to despise unions, too.

EBay auctioning off African 'orphan' ragdolls
Every fashionista worth her salt has already got the Birkin bag and the purse-sized chihuahua -- and now, thanks to EBay, she can afford to adopt her very own "African orphan" just like Madonna and Angelina Jolie.

Yale's stolen Lewis Carroll letter surfaces on eBay
NEW HAVEN, Conn. --A rare letter penned by author Lewis Carroll in 1890 recently surfaced on the Internet auction site eBay, where the seller detailed everything from its beautiful signature to its distinctive purple ink.
To a Yale University librarian, however, it all sounded a bit too familiar for comfort.
Now, police at the Ivy League university are investigating when and how the valuable letter was purloined from its Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
The search for the culprit has taken police down a proverbial rabbit hole as they try to track the letter's path from Yale to a Utah-based collector, who purchased it from another seller without knowing it had been stolen.

Christmas eBay: Michael Richards, O.J., Federline, Britney
Christmas shopping is here and I decided to buy one “If I did it” on eBay. I’ll read it and turn it around and get my money back. If the publisher really destroyed the rest of the copies, boy, I could make a mint..
And, since I’ve been such a good boy this year, it’s back to eBay again, this time to bid on a complete series of Seinfeld. I am a Kramer nut. He’s such a good guy on the program. His alter ego, Michael Richards just went berserk. I’ll buy a tape on anger management and send it to him as an e-gift.

UPDATE 1-Web sales down on Black Friday, EBay most visited
LOS ANGELES, Nov 25 (Reuters) - EBay was the online winner this "Black Friday," data published on Saturday showed, but overall Internet traffic growth was well below last year's even as bargain hunters tracked down sought-after toys and electronics on the Web before "Cyber Monday."
Overall traffic to the Nielsen/Net Ratings Holiday eShopping Index, which tracks more than 120 online retailers, rose 12 percent on the Friday after Thankgiving over the same day last year, according to the online audience measurement firm.
That is significantly below the 29 percent growth in overall traffic to the index from 2004 to 2005 and more in line with 11 percent growth seen from 2003 to 2004.
EBay Inc. (EBAY.O: Quote, Profile, Research) had the most Web traffic on "Black Friday," one of retail's busiest days, with 7.5 million unique visitors, according to the data.

Florida mulls how to regulate eBay businesses
The eBay community is thriving, and so are the businesses that sell stuff for people on the popular auction Web site.
Now add Florida to the growing list of states deciding how to classify and regulate those enterprises. No one can seem to agree whether they are auctioneers, pawnbrokers, secondhand shops or something else.
The quarterly newsletter of one state board said recently that the businesses must be treated as auctioneers, requiring their owners to be licensed.
"It's just common sense," said Fred Dietrich III, chairman of the five-member Board of Auctioneers. "If you are going to hire someone to sell your merchandise, you need someone that is reputable and licensed."
